Travel safely on the roadways this Fourth of July weekend

As you get together with family and friends for backyard BBQs and awe-inspiring fireworks shows this Independence Day, please drive carefully, especially considering the Fourth of July weekend is typically one of the most dangerous times to be on the road.

In fact, according to recently released estimates by the National Safety Council (NSC), there may be as many as 409 people killed and 49,500 injuries on our nation's roadways this holiday weekend - the highest predicted number in seven years. Given these dire estimates, it is more important than ever for you to be vigilant when behind the wheel.

Sadly, however, there is no way to absolutely guarantee your safety if you are on the roads this Fourth, particularly since you can't control when other drivers decide to use their smartphones or think it is a good idea to drive after drinking alcohol.

With that being said, there are still things you can do to lower your risk of getting into a car accident. For instance, the NSC offers many safety recommendations, including:

  • Avoid cellphone use while driving
  • Never drink and drive
  • Do not speed
  • Make sure you and your passengers are buckled up
  • Make sure your children are in age-appropriate safety seats

Whether you live in Southern California, somewhere in the Midwest or even on the East Coast, take care this Fourth of July Weekend and get to your destinations safely.
