Children are particularly susceptible to dog attacks

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are approximately 4.5 million dog bites each year in the United States. While that number is certainly staggering, another equally concerning statistic reported by the ASPCA is that roughly half of all dog-bite victims that seek medical attention are actually children.

They are likely several reasons why children are particularly at risk when it comes to dog bites and attacks. For instance, given their small size, children are often physically unable to defend against many dog attacks, which can also contribute to the severity of their injuries. In addition, many young children are simply not mature enough to understand how dangerous dogs can be - making it more important than ever for dog owners to keep their dogs in check.

Fortunately, there are several things parents can do to help prevent child-related dog bites, including:

  • Don't allow children to approach strange or unknown dogs
  • Don't allow children to approach unleashed dogs or dogs on long leashes
  • Don't allow children to attempt to pet dogs through fences or car windows
  • Teach children not to surprise or startle dogs
  • Teach children to avoid entering a dog's personal space, especially when it is eating or sleeping

While there are certainly many more tips one could follow to keep children safe around dogs, these suggestions are certainly a good first step - especially if they prevent even one child-related dog attack.
