5 dog breeds commonly linked to serious bite injuries

Even though most people would like to believe their dogs would never bite an innocent person, the truth of the matter is dog attacks occur all the time - and often involve dogs that have never shown signs of violence.

According to a report by the Insurance Information Institute (III), dog attacks are so common that more than one-third of all homeowners' insurance liability claims paid in 2014 were associated with dog bites and other dog-related injuries, with California having more attacks reported than any other state. Given the surprising frequency of dog attacks, one might begin to wonder if certain breeds are more to blame than others are.

While it is true that virtually any breed of dog is capable of violent outbursts, a handful of certain breeds are often singled out as being more dangerous. For instance, according to a review of various dog-attack studies conducted by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), there are some dog breeds that are more frequently implicated in dog attacks and biting incidents, including:

  • Pit bulls
  • German Shepherds
  • Rottweilers
  • Jack Russell Terriers
  • Chow Chows

Even though the AVMA is quick to point out that there may be many reasons why these particular breeds are reportedly involved in more dog attacks - such as breed popularity, bias and dog mistreatment - there is no disputing that these attacks nevertheless occur. For example, even if there is a bias toward reporting pit bull bites, that doesn't change the fact that they are more commonly identified in attacks that lead to severe injury or even death.

Given the dangers associated with dog bites and attacks, many states, including California, have passed laws that make dog owners legally responsible if their dogs bite anyone - even if the dogs were never previously violent. Some insurance companies have even begun to refuse coverage for certain breeds.

With summer now in full swing, make sure to protect yourself and your family from all dogs, even if you think the dog in question is peaceful and safe - after all, you may not know a dog is dangerous until it is too late.
