Postal workers beware, San Diego is 3rd worst city for USPS dog bites

In honor of National Dog Bite Prevention Week, which runs May 17-23, the United States Postal Service (USPS) recently released a list of the top 30 cities for dog attacks among postal workers and letter carriers. In total, 5,767 postal employees were involved in dog attacks last year.

Sadly, according to this list, San Diego had the 3rd most USPS dog attacks in 2014 - with only Houston and Los Angeles having more. In fact, there were more dog attacks involving postal workers in San Diego than in several other cities with larger populations, including Phoenix, Chicago and Philadelphia, just to name a few. San Diego's 3rd place ranking in this year's list is even worse than last year in which they were 4th.

This annual ranking merely illustrates the many animal-related dangers faced by letter carriers and USPS employees today. The truth of the matter is that these hard-working individuals would be significantly safer if dog owners would just take a little more effort to restrain their animals when mail is being delivered.

Linda DeCarlo, the Postal Service Manager of Safety, probably said it best in a recent USPS press release, "Any dog can bite and all attacks are preventable through responsible pet ownership."

Thankfully, California postal workers may have legal recourse available when they are bitten by dogs. Specifically, under California's dog-bite statute, dog owners are legally responsible for any injuries caused when their dogs bite someone who is just doing their job as a postal worker. Therefore, if you have been bitten while delivering the mail as a USPS employer, you may be entitled to compensation.
