San Diego dog bites, pit bulls injure three in Bay Terraces

Dog bites were rampant in Bay Terraces on March 1st of this year. A roaming pack of three pit bulls attacked three different people in three separate attacks. The dogs first attacked 60 year-old Norma Williams while she was walking home from Church. The pit bulls surrounded and attacked her, biting her ankle and ripping her pants. Nearby resident Michael Ward heard Ms. Williams' screams and came to her aid. The pit bulls then attacked Mr. Ward, biting him many times on his thigh and torso. Later, the dogs attacked a 79 year-old man who was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for the dog attack injuries.

In 2013 78% of all fatalities from dog bites were caused by pit bulls. On average, a pit bull takes one human life on American soil every nineteen days. Even though pit bulls only make up 6% of the entire U.S. dog population, they are statistically the most deadly and dangerous breed of dog.

In California dog owners are strictly liable for the injuries caused by their animals. When the animals have a history of aggressive behavior and prior bites a punitive damage judgment may also occur. Punitive damages occur when the dog owner acts with callous disregard for the rights of others. These damages are in addition to the economic and non-economic losses sustained by the victims. Economic losses include medical and hospital bills for wound care, scar revision and lost earnings. Non-economic damages include the victim's pain and suffering, emotional distress and humiliation.

When an attack occurs as a result of dogs running at large, prompt hiring of an experienced dog bite attorney is very important. City and county agencies, such as animal control and police, are important resources for information. However immediate private investigation is important to determine ownership of the animals and all others who may be responsible for the events leading to the attack. This includes investigating the property where the animals were kept and the training of the animals.
