San Diego Dog Bites, $7 million jury verdict for victim

In a recent Florida dog bite case, a jury awarded a man more than $7 million to compensate him for injuries and future medical expenses associated with the dog bites he suffered back in 2011. The man sustained severe epidermal injuries and permanent back injuries as he fought to escape from three aggressive dogs owned by his neighbors.

The back injury the victim sustained from twisting and turning to wrestle away from the dogs has been unimproved despite an operation, psychical therapy, and the use of pain relieving medications. The dog bite victim says that daily tasks like showering and getting dressed are now painful, and have left his day to day activities "very limited".

These types of severe injuries can sometimes be overlooked in dog bite cases, since most people would assume that injuries are limited to the actual bite wounds. However, that is not always the case. In some situations dog bite victims may also experience emotional distress or anxiety following an attack.

The victim here still remembers the feeling of terror as the dogs bit him, so it is possible that the jury took into account that lasting trauma as well in assessing the damages. Unfortunately, it is not clear that the man will ever be fully paid for the $7.8 million. Large verdicts are difficult to pay even for very well-off defendants. In some cases dog bite damages may be covered by a home owners insurance policy
