Drunk Driver Causes Wrongful Death of Young Carlsbad Man

There are few things more tragic than the wrongful death of a young, promising life caused by a drunk driver. Vincent Edward Zellefrow Jr. of Carlsbad was an  outgoing 20-year old man who loved music and skateboarding. Zellefrow was attending MiraCosta college with intentions to transfer to UC Berkley to pursue a career as a music teacher.

This young life came to a tragic end on February 12, 2014, when he was hit by a drunk driver.  The driver of the vehicle is believed to be a 17 year-old female who has since been arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI, and felony hit-and- run.

According to witnesses, at the time of the accident, Zellefrow and his friends saw the vehicle approaching them as they were skateboarding on the 6000 block of Carlsbad Blvd.  It was shortly before 11 p.m..  The victim and his friends moved over to the shoulder as far as possible to allow the car to pass.

However, the driver of the on-coming vehicle was under the influence of drugs and alcohol.  She was unable to control her vehicle and ran over Vincent Zellefrow. The driver immediately sped off.  Police were able to locate and arrest her shortly thereafter at her residence.

The family of Vincent is left with the grief and heartache of losing a loved one and the disbelief and anger due to the drunk driving by the driver of the vehicle.  The drunk driver will be held accountable and faces both criminal prosecution and a civil lawsuit. The civil lawsuit will seek damages for Vincent's family for his loss.  Additionally, punitive damages will be sought.

In the civil lawsuit, early investigation of the facts and circumstances will make all the difference in finding all the responsible people and sources for Vincent's heirs' recovery. It is clear the driver is responsible but others may be responsible as well.  For example, who supplied the 17 year old driver the alcohol and drugs which caused this death? Where was the driver coming from and going to? The driver's parents are liable for the wanton acts of their child so they too are responsible.  By hiring a personal injury attorney early investigation will occur.
