San Diego Hit and Run Pattern, Crime Stoppers Can Help

After a deadly string of hit and run accidents shook the San Diego community during the past few months, victims and their families are often left without the identity of the perpetrator. On Wednesday February 12 of this year, 20-year-old Carlsbad resident Vincent Edward Zellefrow Jr. was hit by a 17-year-old girl who was under the influence of alcohol and drugs. While under the influence, she hit Vincent while he was skateboarding with a friend. Vincent did not survive the accident. The 17 year-old-driver fled the scene.  Quick investigation found both the vehicle and the driver.

Prior to Vincent Zellefrow's wrongful death, Alonso Florez Pacheco, a San Ysirdo resident, was killed in a pedestrian vs automobile hit and run. Just days before Mr. Pacheco was killed, the Old Globe's prop director, Seamus O'Bryan, was killed in a motorcycle hit and run accident in North Park.

Uninsured motorist coverage and medical payment coverages may provide some financial relief to the heirs of the deceased, and in Vincent Zellefrow's case, the automobile insurance of the driver, her parents automobile and homeowners policy and the individual who supplied the intoxicants may also be sources of recovery.

Additionally, the crime victims fund may also be available to provide financial relief for the heirs.

The difference between the Zellefrow case, that had witnesses, and the other two hit and run matters is that when witnesses provide information the perpetrator is more likely to be identified and held accountable.

Recently, in the Seamus O'Bryan tragedy, the San Diego Police Department released photographs of the vehicle that struck Mr. O'Bryan.  The Police have asked for witnesses, including anyone that can identify the owner of the vehicle.

Witnesses are often reluctant to report details of an accident. However, a group known as Crime Stoppers encourages otherwise reluctant eye-witnesses to report details they know about an accident. Crime Stoppers incentivizes these witnesses with thousands of dollars in rewards if their information leads to the perpetrator being found and held accountable.

If you have recently witnessed, or have any information whatsoever regarding a hit and run accident, please contact your local Crime Stoppers division to share the information. Similarly, If you or a loved one have been injured or killed in a similar accident, you should contact an attorney immediately to ensure that all necessary steps are taken to investigate the accident, idenitfy sources of recovery, locate the perpetrator, and obtain justice.
