San Diego Animal Bites, Petco Sells Infected Pet Rat

Deadly animal bites in San Diego can come in a wide variety of forms, from savage dog attacks, to exotic animals wreaking havoc. However, the wrongful death of a San Diego 10 year old boy came from a surprising culprit: a pet rat purchased from the commercial pet store, Petco.

Aidan Pankey had recently purchased a rat from Petco to keep the other rat he already owned company. However, after the new rat bit Aidan, he was rushed to the hospital where he later died. The cause of death was rat bite fever. According to the CDC, people can contract rat-bite fever from bites or scratches from infected rodents, or just by handling the animal.

Consumers rely on pet retailers to properly screen the animals for infectious diseases. However, business negligence is no anomaly. When a business is negligent the result for the trusting consumer can be catastrophic.

Animal and pet retailers process numerous creatures daily thus the risk of a dangerous animal reaching the public domain increases. These businesses have a duty to conduct their operation so as to not present a risk of harm to their customers and the public in general. When their procedures are inadequate or fail those businesses are liable for the harm they cause.

If you or a loved one have been injured by an animal bite-regardless of how big or small the animal might be-do not hesitate to contact an attorney. Prompt action and investigation is the way to determine all the facts and circumstances so that those responsible are held accountable.

One of the many risks that owners of unusual pets face is unusual animal disease. When pet stores sell these types of animals to the public, the unsuspecting consumer trusts that the "expert" pet store has tested the animal for disease. You would not expect a pet store to sell a puppy with distemper or rabies. However, these retailers make mistakes. When mistakes are made the result on the unsuspecting consumer can be catastrophic. The retailer, wholesaler and all those entities in the chain of commerce should be held accountable. For over 35 years our office has been helping injured victims hold the responsible entities accountable for their acts. We can be reached at 619-233-6078.
