Parents of Teen Killed in Asiana Airlines Crash File Suit

The parents of a teenage girl who was killed following the Asiana Airlines crash last summer have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of San Francisco. An autopsy showed that the Chinese national didn't die in the fiery crash but was instead run over by rescue vehicles at the scene.

The lawsuit states that the girl died as a result of reckless and poorly-trained emergency responders who "breached their duty of care." An investigation by the National Traffic Safety Board determined that the girl was run over twice at the chaotic scene, which was covered in foam to help extinguish the flames.

The teenager was one of three people killed as a result of the July 6 crash. At this point, it is unclear how the teen got out of the plane, but the lawsuit states that rescuers likely carried her to the tarmac. The investigation revealed that firefighters at the scene had assumed the teen was dead.

The teen was struck first by a fire rig that had earlier maneuvered around her body, and again by another fire truck that was getting more water to bring to the scene. The lawsuit states that one of the many emergency responders at the scene should have checked to see if the girl was alive and moved her to a safe location out of the chaos.

The tragedy has already changed emergency response protocol at San Francisco International Airport, and the wrongful death lawsuit could potentially lead to additional changes in effort to prevent something like this from happening again.

The teen was described in an obituary as an outstanding student, athlete and musician. Undoubtedly, the girl's family was heartbroken to lose her far too early.
