Facial Wounds to Child in Dog Attack in Oceanside, California

A child sustained facial wounds when she was the victim of a dog attack in Oceanside, California. A pit bull bit a 3-year-old girl in the face when she wandered into the dog's yard in Oceanside, police said. The girl was taken by ambulance to Rady Children's Hospital.

The summer of 2012 has seen many dog attacks throughout San Diego County. In June, 2012 a child, in Chula Vista, California was killed when he was attacked by 3 male pit bull dogs.

Statistics kept by the county Department of Animal Services, which serves the county's unincorporated areas as well as San Diego, Santee, Carlsbad, Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas, show pit bulls were responsible for the most dog bites - 389 cases - for the fiscal year that ended June 30. Ten cases were attributed to the American Staffordshire, a breed commonly identified as a pit bull. Next on the list were Labrador retrievers (199 bites), Chihuahuas (174) and German shepherds (136).

In the past two years, dog attacks contributed to four previous deaths in San Diego County.

May 25, 2010: Postal worker Hao Yun "Eddie" Lin, 33, was covering a co-worker's Oceanside mail route when a Rottweiler attacked him and he fell to the ground, injuring his head. He died nine days later.

July 31, 2010: Aaron Carlson, 2, was mauled to death by his family's German shepherd in their Tierrasanta home. The boy's mother, Valerie Grace Carlson, pleaded guilty to child endangerment, and was sentenced to a year in county jail and placed on five years' probation. She was drunk and passed out when the attack occurred.

June 18, 2011: Emako Mendoza was mauled by a pair of pit bulls that escaped from a neighbor's yard in Paradise Hills. She underwent eight surgeries related to the attack before dying at the age of 76 on Dec. 24. Alba Cornelio and her daugther, Carla, are being prosecuted for involuntary manslaughter, along with other charges, and face up to four years and eight months in prison.

March 1, 2012: Postal carrier Diane Jansen was bitten on one leg by a pit bull while delivering mail in Escondido. The 59-year-old died a week later from a stroke and heart disease, but the county medical examiner listed the dog bite as a contributing factor.
