Dog Bites in San Diego County

Dog bites and dog attacks in San Diego County frequently occur and result in severe personal injury and sometimes death. Each year many adults and children are the victims of dog bites and attacks. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Humane Society maintain statistics gleaned from reporting agencies and hospitals. The United States Postal Service reports that San Diego is the second most dangerous city in America for dog bites to letter carriers.

According to the American Humane Society, an estimated 4.7 million dog bites occur in the United States each year. Of these bites nearly 800,000 dog bites require medical care. Approximately 71% of bites occur to the extremities (arms, legs, hands, feet). Dog bites to children are typically to the child's face. Approximately two-thirds of bites occurred on or near the victim's property, and most victims knew the dog.

Tragically some families realize the horror of a fatal dog attack. The Humane Society reports that last year 238 dog-bite-related deaths occurred in the United States. Over 90% of those fatal dog attacks involved male dogs and notably, 94% of those dogs were not neutered. Additionally, at least 25 different breeds of dogs were involved in these fatal dog attacks.

In California, dog owners are strictly liable for the injuries and damages their dog causes. If the dog owner owns a home there should be homeowners insurance. If the dog owner rents their home, a renter's policy may be in place.

An experienced personal injury attorney will help the victims of dog attacks. The attorney will obtain the information necessary to help make the victims whole including the applicable insurance.

The attorney will build all aspects of the case including seeking reparation for the physical and emotional injuries that accompany such attacks. Additionally, if future medical care is required such as plastic reconstructive surgery an experienced personal injury attorney will obtain and present that information. If it is a fatal dog attack the experienced personal injury attorney, for the heirs of the deceased, will pursue damages for the wrongful death of the deceased. These damages include the loss of the care, comfort and presence of the deceased.

According to the Humane Society statistics the insurance industry pays more than $1 billion in dog-bite claims each year.
