Dog Attack in Oceanside, California Injures Child

On Tuesday, June 27, 2012, at 6:20 p.m., a six year old child was the victim of a pitbull dog attack in Oceanside, CA. The girl and her sister were in a friend's apartment for a few minutes while the victim's father went outside to help a friend remove groceries from the car.  When he returned the pit bull was mauling the six year old girl.

The child sustained numerous dog bite injuries.  She had serious facial and head injuries.  The dog bit her head, face and the back of her neck. The dog bite injuries were so serious the child was airlifted to Rady Children's Hospital.  She is expected to recover from her injuries but she will have a long recovery and (possible) permanent impairments from the dog bites. The victim's name was not released.

The 1 1/2 year old male pitbull dog, was impounded by the San Diego Humane Society. The dog's owner was not home at the time, police said. The dog does not appear to have a record of previous attacks, said the Humane Society. The agency is conducting a separate investigation and is working to contact the owner so the dog can be relinquished to the shelter. The Humane Society will be unveiling an educational program later this year focusing specifically on pit bulls.
