Dangers at School: Injuries to Children

Our children face many dangers at school. Those dangers include molestation and sexual predators. Parents should not have to worry about injuries to children or their children's safety in schools. It is the responsibility of teachers and school districts to ensure that our children remain safe from molestation and sexual abuse. The school and school districts must take any complaint seriously and investigate immediately.

The schools and school districts must supervise all of their employees to ensure that a sexual predator is not in the classroom, cafeteria, playground or locker-room with our children. When the schools and school districts fail in their duty to keep our children safe, the consequences for the children are tragic and lifelong. These are inexcusable injuries to children.

On June 18, 2012, in Vista, CA a jury found by a unanimous verdict, the Carlsbad School District 40% responsible and elementary school teacher Raymond Firth 60% responsible for the molestation of two young girls. The verdict, rendered Monday, means the Carlsbad School District will have to pay around $2 million dollars and Firth paying the remainder, over $2.5 million dollars. The girls were both eight years old at the time the molestation occurred. They are now both thirteen years old.

The Carlsbad School district failed to protect our children and investigate Firth after it received complaints about his behavior with second and third grade students. In 2010, Mr. Firth pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual battery and one count of false imprisonment. He spent 22 months in prison before being released in March. The charges related to three young victims in his third-grade classrooms during the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 school years.

The scars on victims of sexual abuse do not heal overnight. Some scars last a lifetime. Teacher misconduct in the classroom is unacceptable. To overcome the trauma of sexual abuse or molestation is a feat in itself. There are resources available to make victims of sexual abuse whole. These resources include obtaining reparation for the injustice in the form of monetary compensation, public awareness and incarceration of the perpetrator. Help us ensure our children our safe and the sexual predators and those that allow them access to our children pay for the pain and suffering they cause. For over 34 years our attorneys at the Law Office of David P. Beeson have been helping victims overcome injuries. Experience counts.
