Bicycle Accident Kills Bicyclist in San Diego, California

On March 22, 2012 another fatal bicycle accident occurred in San Diego, California when a bicyclist riding in Clairemont was killed . Fatal bicycle accidents in our community occur much too frequently.  Our good weather provides many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. However, riding a bicycle on any street presents a real danger to the bicyclists. When a bicycle is involved in an accident, the bicyclist is likely to have serious injuries or even death.

The first automobile crash in the United States occurred in New York City in 1896, when a motor vehicle collided with a bicycle rider. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) approximately 700 people per year die from injuries sustained in bicycle accidents. Tens of thousands more people are injured in these accidents each year.

Statistics show bicycle fatalities occur more frequently in urban areas, at non-intersection locations, between the hours of 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., and during the summer months. Interestingly, men between the ages of 30 to 45 comprise the demographic most likely to involved in a bicycle accident or crash resulting in injury or death.

According to NHTSA, and just common sense dictates, all bicyclists should wear properly fitted bicycle helmets every time they ride. A helmet is the single most effective way to prevent head injury resulting from a bicycle crash.  Bicyclists should increase their visibility to drivers by wearing fluorescent or brightly colored clothing during the day, dawn, and dusk. To be noticed when riding at night, use a front light and a red reflector or flashing rear light, and use retro-reflective tape or markings on equipment or clothing.

Drivers of motor vehicles need to share the road with bicyclists. A driver should allow at least three feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist on the road, look for cyclists before opening a car door or pulling out from a parking space, and yield to cyclists at intersections and as directed by signs and signals. Be especially watchful for cyclists when making turns, either left or right.
