Vehicle Accidents while Texting and Driving

Technology has brought with it many new dangers such as texting and driving. All over San Diego County many drivers on I-5, I-8, I-15, 163, 76, 78, 905, 54, and 94 are driving while texting.  Many vehicle accidents, car crashes, injuries and death are the result of texting and driving.

When it comes to texting while driving, teens are a particular risk group considering that, according to studies, "The average U.S. mobile teen now sends or receives an average of 2,899 text-messages per month" and apparently some of those texts are being sent and read from behind the wheel. Some studies indicate that over 60% of teens text while driving. Further studies have shown that texting while driving is a family affair. Many teens who admit to driving and texting state that their parents and other adults engage in the same activity.

So what is the big deal? Last year, on average, 8 teenagers died every day from vehicle accidents while texting and driving.  Many of our freeway car crashes occur when a driver of an involved vehicle was texting.

Universities throughout San Diego and the Nation have conducted research in this area. Virginia Tech found that while texting professional truck drivers were 23 times more at risk for being involved in a crash.

The study also found that "texting took a driver's focus away from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds--enough travel more than the length of a football field at 55 mph."
