USPS Dog Bites

Postal Service Announces San Diego Among Top Dog Attack Cities In Nation
We often hear the comment made by to the Postal Service Letter Carriers, "don't worry, my dog won't bite". Given the right circumstances, any dog can bite. Dog attacks are a nationwide issue for everyone and recent statistics show that it is an even bigger problem for USPS Employees. The United States Postal Service released statistics for May 2011 highlighting the cities where the most dog attacks occur nationwide. San Diego was at the top the list tied with Houston Texas for the No. 2 spot. Many see the cause as our good weather which causes many doors of homes and apartments to be left open, where a loose and unrestrained dog can exit the residence and attack and injury Letter Carriers. The USPS reported that Nationwide last year, 5,669 postal employees were attacked and bitten by dogs while working in the line of duty. Beyond the needless pain and suffering, medical expenses from dog attacks cost the U.S. Postal Service (taxpayers) nearly $1.2 million last year. The Postal Service places the safety of its employees as a top priority and USPS Regulations allow Letter Carriers fearing for their safety due to a loose or unrestrained pet, to curtail delivery and ask homeowners to pick up their mail at the Post Office until the carrier is assured the pet is restrained. In cases where a carrier sees a dog roaming and can't discern where it resides, delivery could be curtailed to the entire neighborhood affecting all mail delivery to the area. The Law Office of David P. Beeson, and Attorney John Zucconi, has represented dozens of USPS Letter Carriers and other Postal Employees in dog attack and dog bite cases.
