Automobile Insurance Coverage

Automobile Insurance Coverage

Television advertising is inundated with automobile insurance companies trying to get people to buy their policy. Unfortunately, most people have no idea what coverages to buy and for what policy limit. These decisions are critical and not driven by "the cheapest coverage available".

The automobile coverage everyone in California should include bodily injury liability coverage and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

Bodily injury liability coverage provides coverage if you are in a car accident and as a result of your negligent operation of a vehicle others are hurt. This insurance also requires the insurance company to provide you with a lawyer if a claim is made against you by another person. Additionally, this coverage is mandatory to legally operate a vehicle. Further, you must have this coverage to be able to recover your own non-economic damages such as pain and suffering.

Uninsured motorist coverage is also underinsured motorist coverage. This insurance provides coverage for your injuries and damages if you are hurt in a motor vehicle accident as a result of another person's negligence and that person does not have insurance, or their policy limits are inadequate. This coverage is your insurance for damages sustained by you, or passengers in your car.

The Insurance industry estimates that in certain parts of San Diego County over half of the automobiles are being operated without insurance. This emphasizes the need for Uninsured Motorist Coverage.

Each of these coverages have a policy limit. The policy limit is the maximum amount the Insurance Company will pay under such coverage. The minimum bodily injury policy limit offered in California is 15/30. This policy limit is wholly inadequate. Everyone should have a minimum of 100/300. The additional cost of the insurance is minimal compared to the increase in the coverage dollars. The same is true for Uninsured Motorist Coverage. The minimum uninsured motorist coverage that everyone should carry is 100/300.

The first number of the policy limit signifies the maximum amount the company will pay to any one person. The second number signifies the maximum amount to be paid in any one incident regardless of the number of claimants. You should contact your insurance agent or company and make sure you have policy limits on both of these coverages to the maximum amount you can afford and in no event less than 100/300. I encourage all of my clients to carry obtain and carry both coverages with limits far in excess of 100/300.
